Remarkably this Almanack was actually 16 pages shorter than its predecessor, but that was largely because of a change to the format to the schools' section which ruffled more than a few of the octogenarian readers. What the inclusion of two ladies schools - Denstone and Roedean - did their well being is anyone's guess. Coloured clothing arrived in the Sunday League, and the success of Phil Tufnell heralded, so Graeme Wright, hoped, the revival of spin after a decade of domination by the fast men. The return of South Africa was welcomed, but the decline in the game's popularity in the Caribbean was a concern.
