Gayle does about-turn on captaincy

Chris Gayle has withdrawn his letter of resignation as West Indies captain, and is set to continue leading the side, a West Indies Cricket Board source said at the weekend.
Gayle had served notice of his decision to step down as West Indies captain with immediate effect in a letter to the board on July 22. But is appears that after discussions with WICB president Julian Hunte, he has had a change of heart.
According to the source, Gayle revealed that his about-turn was also influenced by conversations with team-mates and dedicated supporters of West Indies cricket.
He will now be available to lead the side in a tri-series in Canada next week and the ICC Champions Trophy.

I think that Chris Gayle is the best man for the job of being west indies captain .Chris is appreciated by all his team mates and besides that, when Gayle is on the team there is a different atomosphere all together all Gayle needs to do is focus on his batting and west indies team will surely move up the ladder gradually .Do your thing Gayle and remember that u have fans that are 100% behind you.

I read John Dyson wanted chanderpaul to open the innings, but thankfully Chanderpaul stood his ground. Dyson is trying to take the easy way out instead of asking the so called openers to take responsibility to launch the innings. This might sound like a small detail, but until WIndian coaches tell other players internally and PUBLICLY to take responsibility within the side, then there will be very little development in a WIndian test or one day side.

That Chris Gayle is the best thing to happen to West Indies cricket in the last decade is a sad commentary not only on the team but also this region. It's a pity which is an understatement. Actually, why does anyone takes the time to mention much about the West Indies team? Te answer is quite simple: it's due to people like myself who is by the way a West Indian!!!

Chris Gayle is the best man for the job. He might not be the best Captain, but as far as the direction of West Indian Cricket is concerned, he cares. It is not the first time that he's spoken up for the best interests of the team or players and that is why the rest of the team plays with more passion under his leadership.
Some previous Captains were either puppets to the Board and Selectors, or they just enjoyed the status of being Captain, without having any consideration for anybody else. As it stands the Board knew that relinquishing Gayle would cause a split in the team and some of the major players would also stop caring and go and commit themselves to organisations such as the IPL or Kolpak contracts.

nobody should be surprised that the WIndian Cricket board has relented and given the job of captaincy back to Gayle, they are weak and insipid. the only way they are going to change is for the supporters of WIndian cricket to start applying pressure on them, in the manner CLR James did in enforcing the WIndian selectors to appoint a black WIndian captain. Yes, it might take a while, just like it did then, to get them to try and develop WIndian cricket in the way supporters want it to go, but that is the only way it is going to happen, because all they want to do is hang on to their power, even if WIndies cricket is at a low ebb.

A major feature of legendary WI teams (and players) past was the pride they held in their country and team mates. Its hard to see that in Chris Gayle or any current WI cricketer for that matter.

I think gayle should continue because he is very much aggressive and an aggressive captain is always good for todays cricket. However, I think he should become completely aggressive as a captain then WI can have some wins. Similarly, There seems to be problem in selection because we are not seeing much talented new players in WI squade like past years.

I'm glad Gayle is back. I just wonder why everyone looks at Sarwan as captain. He's not much of a leader than a team booster. A leader should be able to keep his team strict and relaxed and Gayle has somewhat shown that. The only thing that can help us right now is a better selection and above all, better player commitment. We've seen Chanderpaul prove that over and over again. Let's see the rest. We cannot have a winning team of two or three players. We need an entire squad. I hope the discussion with Hunte was more than just a chat but some what of an agreement between the two of them.

Gayle is the man for the job. He has the players' respect and is a strong leader (just look back to the Champions Trophy in 2006). The West Indies are catching up to the rest of the cricket world. The recent series against Australia wasn't as one-sided as the 2-0 series result suggests, both Edwards and Taylor are world class bowlers and Chanderpaul is near impossible to dismiss. Perhaps all they need is another batsman that can average around 40 runs and for the selectors to pick a spin bowler and show faith in him by keeping him in the side for a entire series, not just a solitary test such as Jaggernauth. If that happens, the West Indies could well be on their way to climbing back up the rankings

Gayle has been the best thing that has happened to West Indies cricket for the last decade. The West Indies can't make the mistake of changing captains and then reinstating them again. The players recently said they liked playing under their new 'cool captain'. He's respected by players and fans alike and is arguably the most talented cricketer in the world. He plays like an old school West Indian and epitomises the West Indies cricketers we all love to remember from the 80s. Good luck mate.
