Kyle Coetzer's impressive 134-ball 156 wasn't enough to help Scotland beat Bangladesh, who cruised to a six wicket win, in their World Cup 2015 Group A match played in Nelson on Thursday.
Bangladesh' captain Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and opted to bowl first and his bowlers managed two breakthroughs in the first ten overs.
It was then that Coetzer and Matt Machan provided a rearguard for Scotland. The duo added 78 runs for the third wicket, before Machan fell for 35 in the 24th over.
Bangladesh' bowlers looked to add to Scotland's woes, but Captain Preston Mommsen joined Coetzer and refused to hand over the initiative.
Their 141-run stand for the fourth wicket was the highest for Scotland in a World Cup match. It was their first 100-plus stand for any wicket in a World Cup match as well.
Coetzer was clearly the more aggressive of the two batsmen in the stand, which ended in the 43rd over, when Mommsen fell. Coetzer followed two-overs later but Scotland had already scored an impressive 269 at that stage. A late onslaught from Richie Berrington and Matthew Cross helped Scotland score 318 in their innings.
Bangladesh lost opener Soumya Sarkar in just the second over of the match but the rest of the top order, led by Tamim Iqbal's 95, put on an impressive display.
Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan scored heavily to help Bangladesh reach the target in 48.1 overs.
"Not the way we would have liked to end the game. We just weren't able to create enough pressure in the end," Coetzer, the man of the match, said. "We would have taken that score at the start of the day, but we just didn't create the pressure in the second innings. There were a couple of runout chances, but they did bat well in the end. It is nice to get a few runs, but at the end of the day it is the end result, so it is disappointing. I thought 330 would have been good, but I felt the batsmen at the other end were also scoring, so I felt I didn't have to do anything rash. It is a tough loss to take. The guys will be a bit distraught as we worked so hard and feel we do deserve that one win in the tournament."
