ACB pays tribute to the retired Mark Waugh

Australian Cricket Board (ACB) Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland today led the tributes to batsman Mark Waugh who has retired from international cricket after 128 Tests and 244 one-day internationals.

Mr Sutherland acknowledged Waugh's record as one of the finest batsmen Australia has produced with 8029 Test runs at an average of 41.81, as well as 8500 one-day international runs at 39.35, the most by an Australian player.

"On behalf of the Chairman and Directors of the Australian Cricket Board, I congratulate Mark on his outstanding international career," Mr Sutherland said.

"His 14 years at the elite level have been studded with records and he will be remembered as one of the finest cricketers this country has ever produced.

"Since his one-day international debut against Pakistan in 1988-89, Mark has been a near-permanent fixture in an Australian side that has enjoyed outstanding success, including the 1999 World Cup and the record-breaking streak of 16 consecutive Test wins," he said.

Mr Sutherland confirmed that Waugh would be suitably acknowledged at the fifth and final match of the forthcoming Orange Test series against England in Sydney.

"The ACB is currently looking at ways to honour Mark's career, allowing cricket fans to congratulate him on a job well done," he said.

"At this stage our plans are that it will take place at Mark's home ground, the SCG, during the fifth Orange Test in Sydney."

Australian Test captain Stephen Waugh, who played 108 Tests with his brother, the most by any siblings in the history of the game, said:

"It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have played alongside my brother at Test level for the past 12 years spanning more than 100 matches together, and it will seem very strange not to have him with us when we walk out in Brisbane.

"Mark has been an inspiration not only to his team-mates but also to a host of young players because of the way he has played the game - hard but fair and in a positive way.

"His record is an outstanding one and if he decides to continue at domestic level I am sure he can have a positive effect through passing on the knowledge and experience he has gained from more than 100 Tests and over 200 one-day internationals."
