5th ODI: India v England at Delhi, 31 Jan 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

       Good Morning!
Welcome to CricInfo's Exclusive Live coverage of the 5th ODI match
between India and England being played at the Feroz Shah Kotla in
        Delhi.
It is a cold winter morning in Delhi. There is a bit of fog here
and the players are going through their warm-up routine.
The outfield is damp because of the dew. The umpires had a look and
have decided that the match shall start only at 0930 Hrs IST, 0400
        Hrs GMT.
The pitch has no grass on it and looks like a beauty to bat on.
We will be back with you around 0920 Hrs IST, 0350 Hrs GMT, with
        all the live action.

Match State: Match start scheduled for 9.30am local time (4am GMT)

Welcome back. We would have a start in just about seven minutes.
This will be 12th ODI to be played at Feroz Shah Kotla. India has
played nine ODIs and has a good record here, winning Six matches.
New Delhi is the capital of India and naturally there is a heavy
        security cover here.
India leads the series 3-1 and a win here will seal the series in
        their favour.
England have everything to play for, they will be pressing hard for
        a win.
The visitors have made a few changes. James Foster is back in the
side. Andrew Caddick makes his first appearance in the series.
Giles, the left-arm spinner also comes in.
The players going out are Ben Hollioake, Matthew Hoggard and Jeremy
        Snape
India have made on change, Sarandeep Singh comes in for Harbhajan
        Singh.
All eyes will be on the local lad Virender Sehwag. He is in
cracking form. So is the little master Sachin Tendulkar.
It is a sell-out crowd here in Kotla and they are going to have a
        feast of runs today.
India has won the toss and are fielding first.

Match State: Innings Break

A target of 272 in 50 overs might not be a stiff one for the Indian
batsmen, given the fact that this is a small ground and the track
is a beauty to bat on.
Trescothick sold away his wicket after making 35. Hussain tried to
get on with the game and made 49 good runs. Nick Knight scored
        another ODI hundred (105)
Even though he scored a century, Knight failed to push the scoring
along in the middle of the innings, when India was struggling with
        their fourth and fifth bowlers.
At last Andrew Flintoff came good with the bat, scoring a powerful
        knock of 52.
It remains to be seen who will go out to open the innings with
        Tendulkar
Ganguly seems to be carrying an injury.
This is the home ground of Virender Sehwag and might be a good idea
to get him to belt the ball around

       England win by 2 runs.
What a match this has been, 540 runs scored off 100 overs
India were set a target of 272 and got off to a blistering start.
Sehwag was in a murderous mood, attacking Andrew Caddick in
particualr. The tall English fast bowler went for 26 runs off his
        first three overs
The Man of the Match : Ashley Giles
Sehwag gave a catch to Nick Knight at first slip and the chance was
        put down.
Tendulkar (18) too looked good for a big one, but edged a ball from
Caddick to Foster behind the stumps.
Sourav Ganguly joined Sehwag in the middle and got of his mark
        after facing 13 balls.
It was a crucial period of the game, with England applying the
        screws.
Ganguly's inability to get the balla way for runs had an effect on
        Sehwag too
Suddenly Sehwag too found the going very difficult.
Sehwag made 42 runs off 36 balls and edged one from Gough to
        Kinght at first slip.
Dinesh Mongia (20) fell to the pressure, flashing outside the off
to be caught behind off the bowling of Flintoff.
In the meanwhile Sourav Ganguly was given a life, James Foster
missing the easiest of stumping chances. Even the batsmen had
        given up.
Foster was to drop one more catch later to give Kaif a life.
Micahel Vaughan too put down a sitter, after Kaif had played a
        flase shot.
Ganguly and Kaif added 111 runs for the fourth wicket. Ganguly
unleashed an attack on Ashley Giles, hittinghim for a few huge
        sixes.
Ganguly skied a catch to substitute fielder Owais Shah off the
        bowling of Giles.
Then it was all Giles, he went on to pick four more wickets to make
        it five for the innings!
Ganguly had made 74 runs before he got out. Kaif made 46, Badani
(2), Ratra (10), Kumble (2) were the left-arm spinners victims.
Ajit Agarkar gave the visitors a scare by scoring 36 runs off just
24 balls, almost taking India to a win.
If Giles had set up the victory by taking five wickets, it was his
fielding off the last ball that made all the difference
A sprawling save at the deep point fence ensured that just two runs
were scored off the final ball.
Darren Gough too bowled a remarkable last over, keeping the ball
        well up to the batsman.
Even though Ganguly made 74 runs, he is still terribly out of form,
in the early part of his knock he struggled a lot, which put
        pressure on the other batsmen.
But this knock might have dome him a world of good and he might
come out and play a cracker of a knock in the final game in
        Mumbai.
Agarkar too proved that he could score a few runs when it matters
most. It was a brave effort by Agarkar to go chasing and he almost
        pulled it off single handedly.
While England will have to think about their lapses in the field,
which includes the young man James Foster's wicket keeping.
India too have a few things to sort out.
There are a few slow fielders in the side. Ganguly, Srinath, Kumble
and Sarandeep Singh were not really up there to stop those quick
        singles from being taken.
England sorely missed the services of Jeremy Snape, he is a
        fantastic fielder.
The final match of the ODI series will be played in Mumbai on 03
        February, Sunday.
