4th ODI: India v England at Kanpur, 28 Jan 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

A very warm welcome to you all from the Green Park Oval at Kanpur
Unfortunately the conditions here are not as warm as they should be
The start of the 4th match of this 6-match one-day series has been
        delayed
Rain came down last night at around 20.30 local time and since then
        things have not improved
Efforts at getting a start on time have been further hampered by
overcast conditions and the cold which have not helped things dry
        out
One hopes no water has seeped under the covers but it's likely that
the start of play will be delayed by at least one hour
We'll keep you updated on everything here at Kanpur, don't go too
        far away

Match State: Delay - Rain

Things still have not improved sufficiently for play to get under
way. The umpires will inspect conditions in about half an hour.
Many things are variable - the damp outfield, the dew and indeed
the very gloomy overcast light conditions.
Welcome back to the Green Park at Kanpur. Things haven't quite
cleared up yet but the sun is out and there's reason to be
        optimistic about a start soon
India took a 2-1 lead after an emotionally charged match at Chennai
and are keen to close out the series here
Nasser Hussain and England on the other hand have to win this match
        to stay in the series
Stay in with a chance of winning the series outright at any rate
The Green Park has hosted one limited overs clash between these two
teams, back in 1989. On that occasion a knock of 91 from Allan
Lamb was in vain as Chetan Sharma (101) led India to a six-wicket
        win
This venue has hosted 7 matches involving India of which the home
side has won five encounters, suggesting a good record
Of the eight matches played here, teams batting first and second
have won four times apiece suggesting that the toss may not play
such a crucial role. That may not hold true however in this rain-
        shortened clash
Sachin Tendulkar does not have a limited overs ton against England
in 17 clashes. Perhaps today will be his day.
For all that and much more stay tuned for the start of play, we
will bring you all the live action as soon as it starts
Welcome back once more to the Green Park at Kanpur. We can finally
        give you some positive information!
The players are on the field warming up and it looks as though play
will start at 11.00AM local time, 0530 GMT and will be a 40 overs
        a side encounter
The wicket has fortunately stayed dry under the covers making a
        start possible
The wicket looks dry, has some light cracks on it but looks good
        for batting
With the delayed start making this a 40-overs a side the team
winning the toss is likely to elect to bat first and put pressure
        on the opposition
The toss has just been done, with Nasser Hussain wining and
        electing to bat
England make one change with James Foster being ill. Marcus
Trescothick will keep wickets and Graham Thorpe comes in to the
        side
For India, Sourav Ganguly is fit once more and comes in at the
expense of Sanjay Bangar. Mohammad Kaif replaces VVS Laxman who
has been dropped from the squad
Play is about to get under way and fiunally the sun peeps out from
        behind the clouds
The final decision is that 39 overs a side are possible. The field
restrictions will be applicable for 11 overs. The break between
innings is a much reduced 10 minutes.
Indian players have now walked out onto the field
And the England openers follow soon, the crowd is roaring at the
        start of play
       Srinath will begin the proceedings
The Indian players are all wearing black arm bands as a mark of
respect on the untimely and shocking death of media tycoon Mark
Mascarenhas who was particularly close to Sachin Tendulkar

no swing or seam moement on this one, left well alone by a careful
        Trescothick

time, Trescothick opens the face of the bat and steers the ball to

work the ball to the on side but misses, rapped on the pad,

away to the on side with an angled bat
0.5 Srinath to Knight, legbye: one run, good length ball drifting onto

Agarkar who bowled so well in Chennai begins alongside Srinath
1.1 Agarkar to Knight, no run, good length ball on the middle and leg,
played away to the on side with a straight bat, no chance of a
single there, that one kept a bit low
1.2 Agarkar to Knight, no run, a bit fuller but still skidding through
nicely, played to the on side with a straight bat, careful shot as
there's a bit of low bounce for Agarkar here

flicked away effortlessly to the deep square leg region for a
        brace

ball down to the off side with soft hands and sets off for a
single, Trescothick hesitates and then gos for the run a diving
throw from the fielder misses, direct hit would have sent him back

2.5 Srinath to Knight, one run, full and on the off, driven just wide
of mid on for a single, first run off the fifth ball of this over,
tidy one so far from Srinath, can he keep it that way?
2.6 Srinath to Trescothick, no run, just short of a length and outside
the off, Trescothick opens the face and tries to run the ball to
third man, a widish slip fielder put there for this very purpose

India win by eight wickets, go 3-1 up in the series
Tendulkar finishes on 87 not out, Dinesh Mongia on 17 not out,
India win with good 9.2 overs to be bowled.
England thrashed and demoralised completely by an onslaught
unleashed by two players of the same kind, Sachin Tendulkar and
        Virender Sehwag
Chasing 219 runs for a victory, the Indian start to it was a lucky
        one indeed.
Tendulkar survived a close call for a caught behind down the leg
side off the bowling of Gough, TV replays suggested that he did
        get a bat on it.
In the very second over Sehwag survived a loud and confident shout
for lbw against the bowling of Matthew Hoggard. That must have
        been hitting middle stump
What followed after that can only be said as a slaughter. Sehwag
and Tendulkar punished the wayward bowlers.
It was amazing that a professional outfit like the English kept
feeding the two batsmen with deliveries that were angling down the
        leg.
Sehwag made most of the early windfall, getting to the fifty in
style, beating even that little master Sachin Tendulkar.
None of the bowlers proved effective as Sehwag played a blinder of
a knock (82) off just 62 balls, with the help of 14 fours.
Ganguly came out to bat and played a few shots, but still looks
        very rusty indeed.
In the end, it was a completely one-sided match, England no match
to the powerful hitting of Tendulkar and Sehwag.
We are wating for the Man of the Match to be announced
