1st ODI: India v England at Kolkata, 19 Jan 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Good Afternoon! Welcome to the 'City of Joy'. We are at the Eden
        Gardens in Kolkata.
It just doesn't get any bigger than a cricket match at Eden
        Gardens,
The capacity crowd, almost in excess of a hundred thousand have
        packed in to this stadium.
It is a very unique experience for any cricketer to play in Eden
        Gardens
The noise of the cheering sports-loving citizens of Kolkata can be
very un-nerving or a thrilling experience.
Today we have a day-night encounter between India and England.
This is the first match of the six-match ODI series between the two
        teams.
India had won the Test series 1-0 before Christmas and the
Englishmen are back to play the ODIs.
It is going to be a close battle, with England being bolstered by
the presence of Darren Gough and Andrew Caddick.
India is the team to beat in their own territory. A very strong
batting line-up, which includes the master batsman Sachin
        Tendulkar
Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag and others can destroy
any attack on a given day.
England had clawed back in the Test series with some meticulous
planning and some tactics that did not appeal to the connoisseurs.
Ashley Giles was very effective then. In the shorter version of the
game, it is again all about the temperament.
The team that keeps a cool head, usually comes through.
Having said that, playing at Eden Gardens must be a very new
experience for most of the tourists
Who might have played in front of a few thousands, back home in
        England.
The first ODI in Eden Gardens was played on 18 February 1987.
Pakistan beat India in a humdinger of a match by two wickets. Krish
Srikkanth smashed the likes of Imran Khan and Wasim Akram to make
        123 off 103 balls.
Which todate is the best individual score at the venue. Saleem
Mallik stole the thunder by cracking an unbeaten 72 off just 36
        balls.
The best bowling performance at this venue has been that wonderful
performance by Anil Kumble in the final of the Hero Cup (1993)
        against West Indies.
Jumbo destroyed the Windies by picking up the last six wickets to
finish with the awesome figures of 6.1-2-12-6
This is the home of Sourav Ganguly, who desperately needs some
runs. He has been woefully out of sorts with the bat.
A good knock here would do his confidence a world of good.
Ganguly has scored 7097 runs in ODIs at an excellent average of
        44.08
In the year 2001, Ganguly could score only 813 runs at an average
        of 36.95
Nasser Hussain and his team is definitely bound to put up a good
show. Though they don't have the big names, the visitors are a
        good bunch of fighters.
So far, 16 ODIs have been played at this venue. The team batting
first has won it nine times.
As far as the day-night matches go, there has been nine matches so
far and the team chasing has won only twice.
Going by the record book, the team winning the toss should elect to
        bat first.
The pitch in Eden Gardens has a lot of cracks on it. Should help
the spinners a lot in the second innings.
The Toss: India has won the toss and elected to bat first.
       Teams are as follows
India team: SC Ganguly (C), VVS Laxman, SR Tendulkar, V Sehwag, HK

Match State: Innings Break

England will be docked a few overs for certain for slow bowling
rate. Their target is 282 runs
There is something in this track for the spinners. Kumble and
Harbhajan Singh will be a handful. Tendulkar, Sehwag, Badani and
Mongia can bowl some tweakers. It is going to be a tough task for
        the visitors.
After winning the toss, and electing to bat, ganguly and Tendulkar
added 78 runs for the first wicket. Gough was not too effective in
the first spell, not able to get the break-through
Flintoff got rid of Tendulkar and Ganguly.
It was Dinesh Mngia the hard hitting left-haded batsman from Punjab
who turned the tide, playing some lovely shots.
He made a brilliant 71. Laxman made 25 and Sehwag 29
Badani played a good knock of 35
Jeremy Snape bowled well, so did Hoggard, Flintoff and Gough.
Paul Collingwood was a big disappointment, giving away 22 runs off
three overs, which upset Hussain's plans
Now it is for the English batsmen, it is going to be a tough task
on a track which has cracks and a bowling line-up that has Kumble
        and harbahajan Singh.
Match will resume at 1840 Hrs IST, 1310 Hrs GMT.
