Lewry extends Vaughan's trot

Division One

Sussex made the most of a window in the weather to take control against Yorkshire at Scarborough. It was a bowler's day as Sussex lost their last six wickets for 38 before the home side struggled in turn. Jason Lewry claimed three wickets, including Michael Vaughan whose struggles continued when he was caught behind for 19. Jacques Rudolph was the best of a poor Yorkshire effort, reaching 41 before he edged to Andrew Hodd off one that turned and bounced from Ollie Rayner. Robin Martin-Jenkins nipped in late on with two scalps bowling Tim Bresnan, who joined the action today after his England duties, and having Adil Rashid caught at slip. Rashid had helped wrap up the Sussex innings with three of the remaining wickets to fall. He trapped top-scorer Hodd lbw for 81 and added Martin-Jenkins first ball. Corey Collymore fell in freak circumstances when his drive rebounded off Adam Lyth at silly point, back into the stumps with Collymore out of his ground.

Will Smith and Dale Benkenstein made Lancashire toil during the 55 overs possible at Chester-le-Street as Durham moved to 280 for 3. The pair took their fourth-wicket stand to 184 with Smith making his third Championship hundred of the season off 217 balls. Since coming into the side at the end of May, Smith has been a revelation, scoring consistent runs at No. 3, often in tough conditions. This surface is easier than some of late and he has made sure of cashing in to put Durham on track for a good first innings and valuable bonus points. Smith had one let-off, on 117, when Paul Horton missed a catch at slip, but Lancashire didn't bowl well enough to apply pressure. Benkenstein was less fluent and ground to his half-century off 137 balls.

Division Two

3rd day

Daniel Redfern, the 18-year-old batsman, enhanced his reputation with a career-best 69 to steady Derbyshire on another rain-hit day against Glamorgan at Derby. The weather relented enough to allow 43 overs and Glamorgan made early breakthroughs as Adam Shantry - removing Dan Birch through a catch at cover - and Jason Gillespie struck. Redfern arrived at 101 for 4 and stabilised the innings alongside Wavell Hinds (56) with a stand of 79. David Harrison ended the stand when Hinds was caught off the back of the bat trying to pull, but Redfern held firm in just his second Championship game of the season with Tom New for company.

Worcestershire were frustrated in their push for victory against Warwickshire at New Road as rain washed out the third day. Worcestershire hold a lead of 133.

1st day

Kent and Surrey were unable to get started at Canterbury as rain forced the opening day to be abandoned at 3pm. For Surrey it was the fifth Championship day in a row they have had washed out following four days without action at Blackpool last week.
